University Studies

Bachelor of Antarctic Studies
The University of Tasmania, through the Institute of Antarctic & Southern Ocean Studies (IASOS) is offering a BACHELOR OF ANTARCTIC STUDIES, a science degree focused on the Antarctic. Throughout the 3 year degree students choose from either a Life Science or Physical Science stream according to their interests. Two first year units, Antarctic Studies 1A and 1B, are designed to set the background of history, international relations and cultural perceptions of the Antarctic and to give students an introduction to the specialised areas of Antarctic science. This background knowledge will help students make informed choices about areas of study in years 2 and 3. The University has a large Antarctic research community and annually enrols large numbers of higher degree students in this area across the Hobart campus. While a consortium of Northern Hemisphere universities offers an undergraduate degree in polar studies, the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies, there has been no equivalent course dealing with Antarctica. The University of Tasmania is the first to offer a degree concentrating on the Antarctic.
