The RSV Aurora Australis is a highly sophisticated multi purpose vessel which is designed to fulfil the role of a research, supply expedition vessel capable of operating in polar regions. The RSV Aurora Australis is based in Hobart and used by the Australian National Antarctic Program to carry out science and resupply operations. The vessel is 94.91 metres long, has a dead weight of 3,893 tonnes, and is classed as an Ice Class 1A Super Icebreaker under Lloyd's Register of Shipping + 100 A1 + LMC UMS DP (CM): CASPR Class 2 Amidships, Class 3 fore and aft. The Kapitan Khlebnikov is a Russian Soviet Era Icebreaker. It was built for working in Arctic waters during winter around Siberia.Currently it is operated by a shipping company based in Vladivostok. The collapse of the Soviet Union meant that such assets as ice breakers could be chartered out for hard currency. In 1990 The Kapitan Khlebnikov was refitted for use as a tour ship in the Arctic and Antarctic.
